Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup white granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples (thinly sliced)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add the eggs, cream, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Chill the batter in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  4. Get the batter out of the refrigerator and stir gently, mixing any flour that settled to the bottom during chilling.
  5. Preheat the oven to 325° F / 170°C (150°C if using a fan-assisted oven).
  6. Line a baking pan (bottom and sides) with parchment paper, ensuring it hangs over the sides for easy removal.
  7. Pour the batter into the lined baking pan and arrange the slices of apples over the batter.
  8. Bake for 45 – 50 minutes, covering with foil if the top browns too quickly.
  9. Check for doneness with a skewer; it should come out clean.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 15 – 20 minutes.
  11. Lift out the baked custard pie using the parchment paper and slice to serve.
