A delightful recipe for making easy fried apple pies, perfect for a sweet treat.


Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced (1 Granny Smith and 1 Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider (or apple juice)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/3 cup HOT milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla (for glaze)
  • 1/2 cup milk (for glaze)
  • Oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes.
  2. Combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla in a saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, combine apple cider (or apple juice) and cornstarch, then pour into the saucepan and cook on high for an additional 3 minutes until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Sift flour in a large mixing bowl, then cut in cold butter until it resembles tiny lumps.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine egg yolks and salt, then gradually stir in hot milk.
  7. Pour the milk and egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  8. Knead the dough for about 1 minute until smooth, then divide into 6 pieces and roll into balls.
  9. Roll each ball into circles using a rolling pin or glass.
  10. Fill each circle with 2 tablespoons of apple pie filling, fold in half, and pinch edges to seal.
  11. Heat oil in a pot to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  12. Fry the pies for about 2 minutes per side until golden brown, then place on paper towels to dry.
  13. Make the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  14. Glaze the warm pies and let set for a few minutes before serving.
